John Gregory has achieved a feat no other Englishman has done, by winning the Indian Super League with Chennaiyin FC.

Gregory, the 63-year-old former Aston Villa, Derby and QPR manager, guided Chennaiyin to their second league title with a 3-2 victory over Bengaluru in the final.

He celebrated the success by extending his contract with Chennai for a further year.

Gregory’s only honour prior to this success came in the 2001 Intertoto Cup, when Aston Villa beat Basel 5-2 in a two-legged final. He guided the Villans to the FA Cup final the previous year, and they played UEFA Cup football in 2001/02.

Gregory was appointed Chennaiyin boss last July, replacing Marco Materazzi, the former Italy star who won the World Cup in 2006.

His last job in England came to an end in December 2014, having stepped down as Crawley manager due to health problems.
