Chelsea owes their joy and glory to Antonio Conte who came to Stamford Bridge not only with a new 3-4-3 formation, but also brought back one of their own to fulfill the success of that formation.
Antonio Conte’s decision to bring back David Luiz sparked a little controversy but the defender has proven he was worth the money. After a successful 2 years with PSG, he rejoined Chelsea at a willing pay cut of £34 million.
“I don’t always like the easy life, that’s why I took a risk and I’m very happy it was the right decision. I cut my salary to come back here but it’s OK. God has given me a lot so I’m very happy with this.” David Luiz told Willian Gallas, former Chelsea defender when he caught up with the Brazilian at Chelsea’s training base.
Chelsea let go of David Luiz after falling out with Jose Mourinho who wasn’t impressed with the defender’s performance. The defender some times played center midfield under Jose Mourinho and he was heavily criticized for not being his best.
Mourinho’s style of play was defensive and he didn’t think David Luiz was a best fit at the back which led him to give the defender away to PSG in 2014 at a record of £50 million. He won the FA Cup, Europa League Cup and Champions League with Chelsea before he left. However Luiz has flourished under Conte’s 3-4-3 formation and has kept his critics silent. He came back new and transformed like a shinny new penny and got his name on the2016/17 PFA Team of the Year.
Luiz was rather forward when Gallas queried his reason for rejoining Chelsea. “Of course you know, I was winning everything in Paris. I was there for 2 years and won all the titles in France. I had a great life, great credibility with the club, but then I took the risk to come back to one country that was not happy with me; where they always criticized me a lot even after winning the Champions League, the Europa League or where I played all the games”.
He came back for the love of the club despite not receiving that love back. He revealed Antonio Conte’s request to be part of his plans for the Club and he gladly obliged. Antonio Conte told him “You are a player I want in my team and to improve my team” and he accepted the challenge. “I’m going to work hard for you and for the team”
Even though he got a winner’s medal, the Brazilian missed out on Chelsea’s FA Cupfinal clash against Liverpool in 2012 and he is looking forward to being his best in their finals against Arsenal. ” I don’t want to miss this one, I want to play, I want to try my best for the team”.
